Nursing Mothers FAQ

If weight gain is more than the recommended amount of weight (25 to 45 pounds) during pregnancy, you may have a harder time losing it all after giving birth. Losing the weight gained during pregnancy is important because not doing so increases the likelihood of becoming overweight or obese later in life. (1, 2) If a year goes by and you haven’t lost all of the weight gained during pregnancy, you may be more likely to keep the weight permanently, according to the WebMD website. (3)

The Institute of Medicine, the medical governing body that sets the DRI's (Dietary Reference Intakes), has evaluated the effects of dieting while nursing. Their conclusions, for the women studied, were that caloric levels greater than 1,800 per day and a gradual weight loss of one pound per week, did not compromise milk production. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) a weight loss of 1 pound a week while breastfeeding is safe and does not negatively affect infant growth. (4,5) WonderSlim® for Nursing Mothers provides meal plans of 1800-2000 calories per day specifically for nursing moms. It's important to remember that every mother and her baby are different and have unique needs - that's why it's important to consult with your OBGYN and/or baby's pediatrician before beginning this or any other weight management program.

Before beginning a weight loss program after childbirth, it’s important to get physician approval. It is generally recommended that breastfeeding women wait for 6-8 weeks before attempting active weight loss, as your body needs time to recover from childbirth and establish a good milk supply. If you are not nursing, The University of Rochester Medical Center advises all new mothers to wait at least 6 weeks after delivery to begin a weight reduction diet such as the WonderSlim® for Nursing Mothers Program. Good postnatal nutrition can help you recover from the stresses of childbirth and the effort of caring for a new baby.

All breastfeeding women need an extra 500 calories per day to make enough breast milk in order to provide adequate milk supply. (6) We offer meal plans for nursing mothers that range from 1800 up to 2000 calories per day. As a starting point, most women will begin their plan at 1800-2000 calories. If at this calorie level you lose more than 1 pound per week, it may be too few calories for you and your caloric level would need to be adjusted to a higher intake level. Your caloric level should be coordinated with your OBGYN and/or baby's pediatrician to ensure the caloric restriction is not compromising your milk production. As you wean your baby off breast milk, your body will gradually be able to handle lower calorie levels.

  • 6) Institute of Medicine. Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Fat, Fatty Acids, Cholesterol, Protein, and Amino Acids (Macronutrients). Washington DC: National Academy Press, 2005.

If you bottle-feed your baby, your caloric needs return to your pre-pregnancy levels, however you don't want to start too low. Remember, your body still needs to recover and you need to have enough energy to meet the demands of your new lifestyle. We recommend you start your weight loss plan at 1200 calories as you balance your weight loss progress and your energy level. This is the minimum amount for women who are not breastfeeding, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. WonderSlim® Standard Meal Plans for Women of 1000-1200 calories are available for non-nursing mothers. A gradual weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week is recommended for new moms who are not nursing. Before beginning a weight loss program, it’s important to get physician approval.

Yes. We strongly suggest consulting with your doctor before starting any diet, exercise or supplementation program.

On the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers Program, you’ll eat 6 times a day, which breaks down to about once every 2 to 3 hours.

Pick the day that works best for you. The first three days are critical so pick a start date that makes sense and does not include social-type events that involve food, which may present additional temptations.

We recommend weighing yourself weekly, at the same time of day each week.

We recommend drinking at least 8 full glasses of water a day.

Yes, you can also have non-caloric beverages on the Program. Make sure to check with our doctor regarding consumption of caffeine and sweeteners if you are nursing. Tea and coffee are only considered non-caloric beverages when consumed without cream or sugar. Monitoring your use of creamers and sweeteners is advised when following the WonderSlim® Meal Plans.

Get right back on track with the next WonderSlim® Meal Replacement or WonderSlim® Meal Supplement. Do not wait until the next day.

After. Use a digital food scale to weigh your “Protein” (meat or other) serving after you’ve cooked it.

If you are a vegetarian, you can have eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, veggie burgers and more. Refer to the Food Selection List for non-meat protein alternatives

The best way to make the shake is to combine 8 oz. of very cold (bottled) water and the powder in a shaker. Shake vigorously. You may also mix the powder with ice and water together in a cup or blender.

We suggest restricting dairy intake to the amount listed on your meal plan. Another suggestion is to try a combination of cold water and skim milk or fat free yogurt. This way, you can still enjoy a thicker shake while minimizing calories. Keep in mind, 8oz of skim milk is an additional 80-90 calories.

Yes. One “Healthy Meal” for dinner along with several other servings of vegetables, fruits, starch, fat and protein are essential parts of the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers Program. Incorporating daily servings of intelligently portioned “grocery store foods” helps you practice healthy shopping, portion-control and cooking habits that are essential to keeping the weight gained during pregnancy off for life.

Most people choose to have their “Lean & Green” meal in the evening, but others choose to have it for lunch. Some of our customers have had great success splitting it between dinner and lunch. This flexibility is one of the features that makes the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers Program a realistic choice for nursing new moms with busy or unpredictable schedules.

Although you don’t have to exercise to lose weight, we strongly encourage making exercise a part of your life. Exercise is not only essential for long-term weight management but it boosts your metabolism and self-image in ways that will help keep the weight off for the rest of your life.

In this guide, we provide a Postnatal Exercise Guide for New Mothers that includes a number of fun, non-threatening exercise routines to get you started.

A low carbohydrate meal plan is not recommended if you are a nursing mother. If you are not nursing, you should maintain a healthy carbohydrate level to ensure adequate energy levels to care for yourself and your baby. See individual WonderSlim® Meal Plans for Nursing Mothers for carbohydrate levels.

WonderSlim® Meal Replacement Shakes (they can also be prepared as a pudding) are the only portion-controlled meal replacement products that are specifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of new moms. Great tasting and easy to prepare, they provide a unique combination of nutritional ingredients specially formulated to replenish nutrients depleted during pregnancy and promote gradual weight loss when used as directed in the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers Plan. WonderSlim® Meal Replacement Pudding/Shakes and Smoothies, in addition to providing 15 grams of high quality dairy protein per serving, are also enriched with 23 vitamins and minerals including dairy calcium. Additionally, WonderSlim® Meal Supplements (breakfasts, lunches, snacks, desserts) are used in the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers plan to provide you with added convenience of portion-control and increased protein intake with reduced calories.

The daily recommended intake (DRI) of protein for adult women is about 46 grams a day. One important exception is pregnant or lactating women, when the daily recommended intake (DRI) rises to 71 grams of protein a day. (7) Three (3) servings of WonderSlim® Meal Replacement Pudding/Shakes or Smoothies per day provide 45 grams of protein. The WonderSlim® for Nursing Mothers Meal Plans follow the principles of high protein diets to help prevent loss of lean muscle and to promote satiety. The Nursing Mother's Meal Plans provide approximately 30-35% of the calories from protein while non-nursing meal plans provide approximately 35-40% of the calories from protein. See individual meal plans for specific protein levels.

DHA supports the brain, eyes and central nervous system which is why it is uniquely important for pregnant and lactating women. DHA is crucial to the development of your baby’s nervous system, and may improve outcomes such as:

  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Motor skills
  • Attention span

Developing infants cannot efficiently produce their own DHA and must obtain this vital nutrient from breast milk after birth. Breast milk DHA levels are dependent on the mother’s diet. Expert panels recommend at least an intake of 200-300mg/day of DHA for nursing women. Unfortunately, most women do not get enough DHA in their diets. On average, nursing women in North America consume 60-80mg of DHA a day, only 20-40% of the recommended intake. Because of a low DHA dietary intake, American women reportedly have lower DHA levels in their breast milk than their international counterparts. Recognizing the importance of maternal DHA intake, a WonderSlim® DHA supplement is provided with the WonderSlim® Nursing Mothers Plan. Our supplement contains life’sDHA™.

The life'sDHA™ Advantage - a Vegetarian Source of DHA

Most people believe that fish are a rich source of DHA, when in fact fish get DHA from the algae in their food chain. life’sDHA™ goes straight to the source, producing DHA from the same microalgae sources fish get it from. Unlike most DHA supplements, life’sDHA™ is a fish-free source of DHA from algae and is therefore free from concern of ocean-borne contaminants. (8) The ingredient has been granted Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) status for use in infant formula by the FDA, and is used in nearly all infant formulas in the United States. (8,9)

Benefits of life'sDHA™:

  • Vegetarian, sustainable source
  • Free from the concern of ocean-borne contaminants
  • Produced in an FDA-inspected facility under current Good Manufacturing Practices in a controlled environment from start to finish
  • Trusted source used in over 99% of infant formulas in the US
