Research by the Institute of Medicine has shown that a minimum of 1800 calories and gradual weight loss of 1 pound per week in nursing mothers will not compromise milk production. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) a weight loss of 1 pound a week while breastfeeding is safe and does not negatively affect infant growth. (1,2) We recommend starting at 2000 calories and adjusting the calorie level down depending on the amount of weight lost after first one to two weeks. Remember, nursing mothers should not consume less than 1800 calories and their weight loss should not be greater than 1 pound per week.
